Attitude Reversed
I overheard an interesting conversation among athletes today about attitudes going into the first competitive event of the season. I'm always surprised when I hear things that are 100% opposed to my perceived view of an athletes expectations, or outlook. It makes me think I'm doing something wrong - really wrong. In this case we had someone who is a very strong contributor to the team, and who I greatly respect, indicating how undesirable it was to compete at our first event of the season - to another athlete.
My feeling is that one of the true tests of sport, that you've been perfecting your body by training for months or years, is in competition. Competition is an opportunity to show how much we value ourselves by putting in the time to follow through with practice, and with your goals and reasons for participating. So to me, this reflected on how the athlete viewed himself, which was very distressing to me.
I need to dive into The Double-Goal Coach : Positive Coaching Tools for Honoring the Game and Developing Winners in Sports and Life. It's sitting's been sitting on my desk staring me in the face for a week now.
