Image Recognition and Classification
It was bound to happen soon: some researchers at Penn State have figured out how to classify the contents of images. This is huge because if the technique can be used to classify the contents of images on sites like YouTube, it will prevent tagging spam.
Tagging spam is the main problem faced by video/photo that are trying to leverage the value of their content. If they don't know what's "really" in the image, then they can't use tags to determine the advertising to place next to it, to monetize the content. This research lowers the barrier to entry for that monetization.
I've read through several of the group's papers, and some of their code. It's pretty neat, and I know it could be optimized to run much faster.
There's good coverage on Slashdot's Automatic Image Tagging post.
